There is nothing quite like snuggling up on the couch with a warm blanket and a good cup of tea on a rainy day. If you are based in the UK like us, you probably experience this a lot. And what could be better than turning on the TV and catching up on your favourite shows? Whether you’re looking for something to make you laugh, cry, or think, there’s sure to be a show that’s perfect for a rainy day.
Today I’m going to focus the best TV series that will make you laugh and smile, because we have all had a difficult couple of years and we need some fun content to binge in bed. Most of the series mentioned in this list are also (in my opinion) some of the best TV shows on Netflix. Here are just a few of the best TV shows to watch on a rainy day.
The Office (US)
I am also a big fan of the UK Office, but as great as it is, it can cause a bit too much cringe, which isn’t ideal when you’re trying to feel warm, cozy and comfortable. The US version also has 9 entire seasons to binge, so if you’ve already seen it and one season isn’t making your day, you can always look around the others. Although if it is your first time watching it, definitely follow the order of the episodes, you don’t want to miss out on any plot points.
Centred around the employees of a fictitious paper company, The Office is filled with dysfunctional yet lovable characters, clever writing, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. If it’s too cold or rainy to go anywhere, The Office is one of the best TV shows to watch for staying cozy and happy at home. The entire show is available to watch on Netflix.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
This next series is not necessarily for everyone, but definitely one of my all time favourites. With the debut of the show’s 15th season, it has officially become the longest running live-action sitcom in US TV history! The reason I say it might not be for everyone, is because it is known for its dark humour and for being one of the most offensive TV shows on air. Of course, everything horrible and offensive the characters do is clearly satirical, mocking the real life people who act in these ways.
The show is about a group of friends who own a bar in Philadelphia. It has a great cast, which includes the show’s creator Rob McElhenney, his co-writers Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, as well as the hilarious Kaitlin Olson and the iconic Danny DeVito, in potentially his weirdest and funniest role yet. Despite having so many seasons, I have still managed to watch the entire show multiple times, so I definitely think it’s one of the best TV shows to watch when stuck at home. Scrubs
Despite the final episode airing over 10 years ago, Scrubs remains a classic comedy series, and one of the best TV shows to watch on a rainy day. The zany medical comedy follows the lives of a group of interns and residents at Sacred Heart Hospital, and it’s sure to take your mind off of your own problems. It’s full of lovable and quirky characters, hilariously awkward situations, and heartfelt moments that will leave you smiling.
A lot of people enjoy medical TV shows, but many of them contain a lot of drama and sad moments, so if you want to enjoy the excitement of a hectic hospital and the lives of the doctors, without stressing out about their long shifts, Scrubs is one of the best shows to watch. It’s also surprisingly medically accurate compared to other shows!
Unfortunately it is not available on Netflix like the others, but there are ways to find it online.
Parks and Recreation
This show is so beloved by every demographic, that there’s no denying it is one of the best TV shows to watch. It’s the perfect mix of comedy and heart, with lovable characters and plenty of laughs. The show follows the misadventures of a group of friends working in the Parks and Recreation department of their fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana.
The department is headed up by Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, and also includes everyone’s favourite, Ron Swanson, played by Nick Offerman. Whether they’re trying to plan a community event or simply dealing with the everyday struggles of their jobs, the characters always manage to find the silver lining. It’s one of those rare shows that can make you both laugh out loud and feel warm and fuzzy inside, and that’s why it’s one of the best TV shows to watch to feel cozy at home. Modern Family
Modern Family has been extremely successful since it first aired in 2009, and has won over the hearts of viewers and critics alike. The show follows the Pritchett-Dunphy family, and the various trials and tribulations that come with being a modern family. In addition to its humour, the show also deals with important issues such as marriage, divorce, gender roles, and parenting.
It has been nominated for an astonishing number of awards, including eight Television Critic Awards (3 wins), ten Directors Guild of America Awards (2 wins), twelve Golden Globe Awards (1 win), eighteen Writers Guild of America Awards (6 wins), twenty-five Screen Actors Guild Awards (5 wins), and a whopping eighty Primetime Emmy Awards (22 wins). This fun, heartwarming comedy is one of the best TV shows to watch on a rainy day to stay warm and happy. Most of the show’s seasons can be watched on Netflix.
Friends
Of course we can’t have a list about cozy, fun TV shows and not mention the ultimate classic sitcom, probably deemed as one of the best TV shows of all time, especially by those of us who grew up with it in the early 2000s. It’s one of the best TV shows to watch in any mood really. In case you’re one of the few people who haven’t seen it, the show follows the lives of six best friends as they navigate their way through life in New York City. It follows the friends as they go through all of life’s ups and downs together.
From relationship dramas to job troubles, and over the course of 10 seasons, we watch as the friends grow and change, and we can’t help but fall in love with each and every one of them. Especially if you watched it as a kid, this is one of the best TV shows to watch when you want to feel comforted and relaxed. All 10 seasons are available to watch on Netflix.
Community
Dan Harmon is best known as the creator of Rick and Morty, one of the most popular animated shows on television and seen by many as one of the best TV shows to watch. However, before he found success with Rick and Morty, Harmon was the creator and show-runner of Community, a sitcom that aired on NBC for six seasons. While Community didn’t achieve the same level of popularity as Rick and Morty, it was still praised by critics and loved by its small but dedicated fanbase.
If you’re a fan of Rick and Morty, you owe it to yourself to check out Community. It’s one of the best tv shows to watch, and you’ll see a lot of familiar elements in it (including some character cameos!). This show is also available to watch on Netflix.
